The pediatric sedation clinic at the American Family Children's Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin, offers patients the opportunity to receive medications to alleviate pain and fear before a procedure, focusing on each child's individual needs and desires, in a child-friendly environment.
Each year we perform more than 1,700 sedations. About half of them are for painful procedures like spinal taps and biopsies and the other half for non-painful procedures like MRIs and CT scans. Our Pediatric Sedation team, a multidisciplinary group comprised of pediatric intensivists, pediatric nurse practitioners, child life specialists, and pediatric nurses, works with each child and his or her parents individually to create a sedation plan that is comfortable, safe, and effective.
The program was established by Dr. Gregory Hollman in 1991 and is one of the longest running pediatric sedation programs in the country.
