About

David Bernhardt, MD, is a UW Health pediatrician and primary care sports medicine doctor. He is also a professor in the Department of Pediatrics and the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.

Dr. Bernhardt cares for children from birth to young adulthood. He offers well checks and vaccinations and treats a wide range of acute (sudden) and chronic (long-term) illnesses such as ear infections, asthma and obesity. He also helps young patients with depression, anxiety, ADHD and other mental health issues, referring them to specialists when needed.

As a sports medicine doctor, Dr. Bernhardt cares for both children and adults with a range of musculoskeletal problems (affecting the muscles, bones, nerves, joints and ligaments). He commonly treats sports injuries, concussions, arthritis (from overuse), exercise-induced asthma and menstrual issues and eating disorders related to athletics.

Dr. Bernhardt believes exercise is medicine and being active promotes good health and well-being. His goal with all patients is to help them stay as active as possible, for as long as possible.

During his free time, Dr. Bernhardt enjoys biking and skiing with family, running and playing piano.

Exercise helps you stay healthy, physically and mentally. I encourage everyone — children and adults — to be as active as possible and do what they enjoy.
