The Babies We Care For

Our NICU is designed to maintain the important bond between mother and newborn during a difficult time.The 14-bed, state-of-the-art Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at American Family Children's Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin, provides care for premature and full-term neonatal infants requiring complex surgical interventions and/or subspecialty medical care.

The babies we care for come from all over the state and region, brought to Madison by C.H.E.T.A., our emergency response team. These young patients require immediate, advanced treatment and/or surgery.

Our team cares for babies:

  • Who have suffered a brain injury
  • Who require diagnostic (magnetic resonance imaging) studies
  • Who have been born prematurely
  • With heart disease
  • Who require surgery, including abdominal, genitourinary, head and neck, thoracic, heart and vascular, cardiac catheterization and musculoskeletal surgery

  • Maternal-fetal specialists available 24 hours a day
