The NICU staff at American Family Children's Hospital provides expert care for very sick newborns.American Family Children's Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) staff in Madison, Wisconsin, provides excellent care for premature and full-term neonatal infants requiring complex surgical interventions and/or subspecialty medical care.

Our care team includes:

  • Neonatologists: Physicians with special training in caring for premature babies and babies in need of complex care.
  • Pediatric surgeons: Physicians with special training in performing surgery on newborns.
  • Subspecialty physicians: Physicians with expertise in any of a number of medical specialties and conditions, called in to provide care recommendations as necessary.
  • NICU hospitalists: Pediatricians who work exclusively in the NICU, working closely with neonatologists and other members of the care team.
  • Residents and fellows: Physicians training for service in neonatology and in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
  • Neonatal nurse practitioners: Advanced practice nurses with specialized training who work with the neonatologists and nursing staff in providing critical care to infants in the NICU.
  • Respiratory therapists: Providers with expertise in treating newborns with lung problems.
  • Health psychologists: Mental health professionals who help families cope with the stress of their stay at the hospital.
  • Child Life specialists:┬áCertified Child Life specialists help children, adolescents and families cope with the fear and anxiety associated with the medical environment and hospitalization.
