American Family Children's Hospital Ranked Among Top 50 Pediatric Hospitals

Madison, Wisconsin - American Family Children's Hospital is ranked among the nation's top 50 pediatric hospitals in six medical and surgical specialties, according to this year's U.S. News & World Report rankings of children's hospitals.

The hospital is ranked among the top 50 children's hospitals in the following specialties:

The magazine requested data from 179 children's hospitals and received enough data for evaluation from 110. A hospital's score is based on outcomes, process (including reputational scores from pediatric physicians) and structure.

"The U.S. News & World Report rankings are one tool used to assess a hospital's performance," said Jeff Poltawsky, vice president of the hospital. "As pleased as we are to be highly ranked, we know that delivering high-quality care is a daily commitment that requires constant attention. I'm happy to say that the commitment of our doctors and staff is strong and deeply embedded in our culture."

"Parents and families rely on American Family Children's Hospital for a broad range of care," said Dr. Ellen Wald, chair of pediatrics. "They are the ultimate judge of whether we are meeting the needs of patients, and the growth of our hospital testifies to our success."

The survey asked questions concerning survival rates, infection rates, nurse staffing, sub-specialist availability and other critical information difficult for those in charge of a child's care to find on their own. This is the seventh time U.S. News has ranked the top 50 children's hospitals.

The 61-bed American Family Children's Hospital, which opened in August 2007, offers a comforting setting to enhance the healing process for patients and their families. The "Sick Kids Can't Wait" campaign, now underway, will add 26 needed critical-care beds and other services to the hospital.

American Family Children's Hospital is part of University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics, which has also been ranked by U.S. News & World Report every year since 1993 and has been the recipient of several national safety and quality recognition honors.

"Children from every corner of this state and from other parts of the country have been treated at American Family Children's," said Donna Katen-Bahensky, CEO of University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics. "Maintaining a high level of quality for all of them will continue to be our goal."
