The purpose of the Child Development Practicum is to give students a hands-on experience to the affects of chronic illness and hospitalization on patients' siblings.
 
This experience is under the supervision of the Child Life Manager/Certified Child Life Specialist and the Sibling Therapy Assistant. This experience will be in Tyler's Place, a playroom for inpatient brothers and sisters between the ages of 3 and 12. Practicum students will have an opportunity to:
  • Learn about and observe how hospitalization and chronic illness affects siblings
  • Plan and implement age-appropriate activities for siblings
  • Facilitate socialization between siblings
  • Provide and enhance sibling programming
  • Observe staff members in their role within sibling play area

Qualifications 

Students must:

  • Have at least sophomore standing in an accredited university or first-year standing from a technical college
  • Have completed at least two accredited child development courses
  • Have prior experience working with children of multiple age groups
  • Be currently enrolled in a university or technical college
  • Complete American Family Children's Hospital volunteer requirements 

Duration

The Child Development Practicum at the American Family Children's Hospital is offered in the summer only. The hours will be Monday through Friday, approximately four hours per day. The position could include special events outside of the regular hours.
