About

Derek Hoyme, MD, is a UW Health Kids pediatric cardiologist. He is an assistant professor and the pediatric cardiology fellowship director in the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Cardiology at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. He treats children with acquired and congenital (present at birth) heart conditions.

Dr. Hoyme’s patients also include pregnant women carrying babies with detectable heart defects. He treats infants, children and teens with structural cardiac defects and other types of heart disease. Dr. Hoyme also cares for healthy children to help their pediatricians rule out potential heart problems.

Dr. Hoyme specializes in noninvasive imaging such as echocardiography (cardiac ultrasound) to evaluate the structure and blood flow through the heart. He provides customized diagnoses, therapies and works closely with interventional cardiology and cardiac surgical teams to promote the health of his patients. Dr. Hoyme works with pediatric critical care doctors and other specialists to provide comprehensive care. He guides children and families from diagnosis and treatment through lifelong follow-up care, making sure they have a voice in their care.

In addition to treating patients and training doctors, Dr. Hoyme is involved in cardiovascular research. His area of focus includes improving care and outcomes after pediatric cardiac arrest.

In his free time, he enjoys reading, cooking, movies, being outdoors and spending time with his family.

I really enjoy connecting with families and helping them through difficult times. It’s also fun to work with kids, which is why I chose pediatrics.
