About

Rachel Petro, MD, is a UW Health pediatrician at UW Health and an assistant professor in the Division of Neonatology & Newborn Nursery at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, Department of Pediatrics.

Dr. Petro is committed to providing guidance and reassurance to parents during the birth hospitalization. She makes sure there are no problems with the baby’s physical exam results, that feeding is going well, and that the baby passes routine screenings during hospitalization.

She helps guide parents through what they can expect the first couple of days after the baby’s birth. Dr. Petro commonly cares for babies with jaundice (a high level of bilirubin which can cause yellowing of the skin), low blood sugar and breathing problems.

Her clinical interests include stabilizing newborns immediately after delivery, diagnosing and treating jaundice during the newborn period, and performing routine newborn procedures. Dr. Petro enjoys facilitating newborn care as part of a multidisciplinary team that includes therapists and other newborn team members.

It is important to me to treat every patient — and their family — with compassion and respect, and to take the time to understand their unique situation.
