The Pediatric Complex Care Program at American Family Children's Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin, provides enhanced, coordinated care for children with complex medical problems that often involve multiple medical and surgical specialties.
At American Family Children's Hospital, patients who may qualify for the Pediatric Complex Care Program will:
- Have problems in three or more body systems
- See three or more medical or surgical specialists
- Have had a hospitalization lasting at least five days or at least 10 medical or surgical subspecialty clinic visits during the last year
"Children with medical complexity are relatively small in number, but are frequent health care consumers,” says Mary Ehlenbach, MD, medical director of the Pediatric Complex Care Program. “Our goal is to provide patients and families with highly-coordinated care with a comprehensive perspective in mind, and to help patients and families navigate the confusing healthcare system. By taking this comprehensive view, we believe the child, family and referring or primary care physician will all benefit."
