Healthy Hospitals, Healthy People
In October of 2013 UW Health removed sugar-sweetened beverages from its cafeteria and vending machines, the first step in an ongoing commitment to improve patient and employee health by providing healthy food and beverage options.
What motivated the change?
"We have a responsibility for the health of the people who work here and visit here," says UW Health interim CEO Jeffrey Grossman, MD, talking to American Family Children's Hospital director of child health advocacy Nan Peterson.
In the video below, Dr. Grossman tells Peterson that while all change has challenges - "No more French fries (in the cafeteria) was a challenge," he reminisces - the move toward healthy food and beverage options has been worth the effort, for one main reason.
"For a health care system," he says, "the return on the investment is better health."
