Holiday Store Helps Patients' Families "Shop" for Gifts
Madison, Wisconsin - Families with loved ones at American Family Children's Hospital over the holidays didn't have to go far to do their gift shopping.
The fourth annual "Holiday Store" was open to families of inpatients on Monday, Dec. 22 in the children's hospital lobby.
The store, organized by Child Life staff and volunteers at American Family Children’s Hospital, was stocked with gifts for children of all ages and developmental stages.
Parents who visited the store were able to choose among several hundred gifts - including books, board games, video games, dolls, musical toys, arts and craft kits, gift cards and hats and clothing. Volunteer "personal shoppers" helped families select their items, and volunteer gift wrappers were available, too.
About 85 patients received gifts from the Holiday Store this year. Child Life staff also made bags for patients whose parents were unavailable during the day, said Julie Auenson, Child Life Services manager. Boxes of gifts were also provided for nursing work rooms, so children admitted to the children's hospital after the Holiday Store was held may also receive a present.
The gifts were donated by individuals, groups and businesses throughout the year. Auenson says donated gifts will continue to be used year-round for patients' birthdays, BINGO prizes, playroom toys, and bedside items for children's hospital units, the Emergency Department and specialty clinics.
