The pediatric psychiatry staff at the American Family Children's Hospital recognizes the emotional challenges faced by families of children who have chronic illness or traumatic injury. Our specialists routinely meet with patients and families to provide the support and guidance children and families need during this difficult time.

  • Individual and group psychotherapy for children, adolescents and their families with a clinical psychologist
  • Assistance with problems such as peer or sibling relationships, low self-esteem, depression and anxiety, coping with chronic illness and behavioral or developmental difficulties
  • Psychological therapy and support for individuals and families
  • Family education regarding behavioral compliance and understanding and coping with illness
  • Relaxation and coping strategies to reduce pain and anxiety
  • Minimizing disruption of normal child development as a result of hospitalization
  • Supporting patient and sibling adjustments to traumatic injury or chronic illness
  • Providing support around issues of death and dying
  • Ongoing consultation/intervention services to support child's return to normal life after a hospital stay
  • Assistance with management of stresses related to growing up, including communication, school and peer pressure
  • Medication management
