Dealing with Pain
After Hours, Holidays and Weekends
Tell the paging operator your surgeon's name and ask to speak to the doctor on call.
At American Family Children's Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin, we care about your child’s comfort. We realize that parents know their children best; therefore, we want to partner with you to help control your child’s pain.
While it may not be possible to make your child “pain free,” we will:
- With your guidance, determine the appropriate pain scale to use with your child.
- Learn what has worked in the past to control your child’s pain and include that information in your child's plan of care.
- Use medication and non-drug therapies when appropriate to control your child’s pain
- Provide information to you about different ways to control your child’s pain. We hope you begin to feel comfortable using these different methods and can use them at any time to relieve your child’s pain.
You are an important member of your child’s healthcare team. We will work together to make sure your child is comfortable. If you have questions or concerns, please speak up and let your child’s nurse know. We are all working toward the same goal: controlling your child’s pain.
Below is the Faces Pain Scale - Revised, a scale that allows children to self-report their pain. This is one of five scales we use to determine how much pain your child is experiencing. It will be important to discuss with your nurse which scale is most appropriate for your child to use here at American Family Children’s Hospital.
